Beauty businesses: what no-shows cost, and how to make a booking fee fair under UK law
By Kamal Leadbitter, Founder · Last reviewed November 2026
The short answer
Two no-shows a week at £45 cost a beauty therapist around £4,700 a year. Calling a deposit 'non-refundable' does not make it so: you may keep only what fairly covers your loss, and you must refund in full if you cancel.
Example beauty treatment prices
| Lash full set | £55.00 |
| Gel / BIAB full set | £35.00 |
| Body sculpting or lymphatic massage | £60.00 |
| Advance booking fee | £15.00, taken off the bill |
| Cancellation window | 48 hours |
The rates below are worked examples, chosen to sit within the range of prices UK businesses publish on their own websites. They are not survey averages. Use them to model your own numbers, then replace them with your real prices. Legal points link to the original legislation or GOV.UK guidance.
Worked model: the empty chair
| 2 no-shows or late cancellations a week (£45 × 2 × 52) | £4,680 |
| Total | £4,680 a year |
A short-notice gap is rarely refilled, and higher-value treatments push the figure up quickly.
Deposits and the Consumer Rights Act 2015
If you cancel on the client, they are entitled to their money back. If the client cancels late, you can keep an amount that fairly reflects your loss — a term allowing more than that risks being unfair under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.
A clear approach is an advance booking fee that is taken off the final bill and only kept for cancellations inside your stated window. Explain it before the client pays.
Patch tests and consultation forms are about safety. A client cannot sign away their legal rights, so treat waivers as a record of advice given, not protection from liability.
Copy-and-paste booking policy
A £15 booking fee secures your appointment and comes off your bill on the day. Cancel or move with 48 hours' notice and it's carried over or refunded. Inside 48 hours, the fee covers the slot I can't refill.
Frequently asked questions
Are non-refundable deposits legal in the UK?
The label does not decide it. You may keep only what fairly covers your loss when a client cancels late, and must refund if you cancel.
How much should a beauty booking fee be?
Enough to cover the real loss of a short-notice gap. Many businesses use a fixed fee or a small percentage, taken off the final bill.
Can a client sign a patch-test waiver?
They can record that advice was given, but they cannot sign away their legal rights, so a waiver is not full protection.
How much do no-shows cost a beauty therapist?
In our worked model, two no-shows a week at £45 cost about £4,700 a year.
